Stopping / Reducing CRA Wage Garnishments
CRA Wage Garnishments
You get the mail and notice an envelope from CRA, whom you have been avoiding for years. You decide to open it and learn that the CRA has applied a wage garnishment to your pay cheque. What does this mean? It means that the CRA has found you and is going to notify your employer that you are in arrears with the government. Your employer will be legally required to send up to 100% of your earnings directly to the CRA until such time as the tax debt is paid in full. They are able to do this without your consent.
If you have not filed your returns, it is possible that the CRA has arbitrarily assessed you and determined what they think you owe in taxes if you had filed. They have no hesitation in garnishing you for these arbitrary amounts, and interest and penalties on top!
Mark Feldstein and Associates, strongly believes that no individual taxpayer should try and fight the CRA alone. We will stand between you and the CRA to deal with your tax problems until that garnishment is reduced/lifted.
Many thousands of garnishments are instated each year by the CRA. Don’t assume it won’t happen to you! Having your employer know that you owe money to the CRA is embarrassing.
If/when you receive a notice that your wages are going to be garnished, you need to take action quickly and call our office. Our tax advocates have years of experience in dealing with various CRA issues, including garnishments, and will help you through your tax troubles.
